Preface
To reflect the change of nutrition and health status among Chinese residents during the key transition period in terms of resident lifestyle and disease spectrum, National Health Commission transformed the ten-year’s period nutritional survey to a routine nutrition and health surveillance. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was nominated by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China as responsible for the organization of the nationwide nutrition and health surveillance covering the whole population, and the surveillance pulled whole-nation representative samples from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and the municipalities in the mainland of China., covering 205 survey sites. During 2010-2012, sampled population aged over 6 years were investigated from 150 survey sites that was classified as big city, medium and small city, general rural, and poor rural. In 2013, target population children aged 0-5 years and lactating women from 55 survey sites were investigated.
In order to strengthen the awareness and attention of the government and society on the nutrition and health status of children aged 0-5 years, children and adolescence aged 6-17 years, and women of reproductive age, we analyzed and described the nutrition and health status in terms of physical development, malnutrition, anemia, overweight and obesity, blood pressure, blood glucose and blood lipid among the three groups, using the data from 205 survey sites covering 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and the municipalities. We divided the description into three parts according to the population: ①nutrition and health status among Chinese children aged 0-5 years; ②nutrition and health status among Chinese children and adolescence aged 6-17 years; ③nutrition and health status among Chinese women of reproductive age.
We appreciated the effort of the staffs from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and the municipalities, CDC, who organized and carried out the survey. We also appreciated the understanding and support from all participants nationwide as well as the hard work from all the members of the national team. We are grateful for the financial support of United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
