Linking other settings with Workspaces
When you select/activate a Workspace, it is possible to have other settings in addition to Bin Layouts simultaneously becoming active (discussed in the previous recipe), saving you time and frustration having to activate them one at a time. The following are two examples:
- Example one – audio mixing: You go to the Windows | Workspaces and select Audio Editing. Instantly, several tools open and the interface windows adjust themselves to your preset (the method to accomplish this is discussed in the earlier section about Workspaces). But the really cool thing is that the Timeline View also simultaneously switches to your preferred display setup because you linked it.
- Example two – color correction: You go to Windows | Workspaces and select Color Correction. Instantly, tools open, the interface windows adjust themselves to your preset, the interface color changes from light gray to black, and the Timeline View simultaneously switches to your desired display. Once again, this is all possible because you linked these settings to be activated together.
For the following steps, I'll be referring to example two (color correction). More information on duplicating, naming, and activating settings can be found at the beginning of this chapter.
How to do it…
We'll begin the process by customizing the interface. Perform the following steps:
- For the Interface settings, go to the Project window, click on the Settings tab, and select Interface.
- Duplicate the current Interface setting.
- Name the new Interface setting as "CC1". Note that you can name settings with any name you'd like, this is simply an example.
- Activate the new "CC1" Interface setting by placing the check mark next to it.
- Open the new "CC1" Interface setting and set the interface brightness to its darkest setting (black). You may also make any other changes to that setting that you'd like (for example, highlight color).
- Click on OK to close the Interface setting. Note that you may want to re-activate the previous light gray Interface setting so you can see the changes occur when you activate the Color Correction Workspace. Further, you'll need to repeat the full process outlined here to link your light gray interface to your Source/Record Workspace. If you do not do this, then the black interface will remain activated when you switch back to the Source/Record Workspace.
- Now we'll customize a Timeline View. Go to the Project window, click on the Settings tab, and select a Timeline View. Duplicate the existing Timeline View that you want to link with a Workspace. One method to duplicate is to go to the Edit menu and select Duplicate.
- In this example, name the duplicated Timeline View as "CC1". Note that when typing identical names for multiple settings, pay attention to spaces and uppercase/lowercase letters. The naming has to be identical for the linking to work. To ensure that the names are identical, you could copy the name from one setting and paste it for the other setting(s). Further, you may want to repeat the full process outlined here to link a different Timeline View to your Source/Record Workspace. If you do not do this, then the CC1 Timeline View will remain activated when you switch back to the Source/Record Workspace.
- To link the Interface and Timeline View settings to a Workspace, start with one of the following:
- Go to the Windows | Workspaces and select the Workspace you want to link with other settings. In this example you would select the Color Correction Workspace. Once it is activated (a check mark will appear next to it in the menu), then go to Windows | Workspaces | Properties.
- Go to the Project window, click on the Settings tab, and scroll to Workspaces. Double-click to open the Workspace you want to link with other settings. In this example you would open the Color Correction Workspace.
- The Workspace View Setting dialog box will open.
- Enable the setting labeled as Link to named settings.
- In the text entry box, type in the name of the setting(s) you want to link with that Workspace. In this example you'd type in
CC1
. Note when typing the name for the setting(s) to link to, pay attention to spaces and uppercase/lowercase letters. The naming has to be identical for the linking to work. To ensure that the name is identical, you could copy the name from one setting and paste it into this text entry box. - Click on OK to close the dialog box.
- You'll need to repeat this process for the other Workspaces in order to link your other desired Interface settings and Timeline Views to them. If you do not do this, then the "CC1" Interface setting and Timeline View will remain activated when you switch back to another Workspace. Note that you can link any User Settings that you like (for example, keyboard); Interface and Timeline Views were used here simply as an example.
- Optionally, you can map Workspaces to buttons in the interface or on the keyboard for added speed and convenience. See the Mapping Workspaces and Bin Layouts and Mapping buttons and menu selections recipes later in this chapter.
