Adding a simple product (information tab)
The information tab is the first one we come to when adding a new product in VirtueMart. We will be using an example of a range of e-commerce movies and related products to demonstrate the different product features of VirtueMart. If you have already read any of the Custom fields recipes you will know why this is useful.
Getting ready
Log in to Joomla! admin and go to the VirtueMart control panel. Now select Products | Products from the left-hand menu and New from the top row of buttons.
How to do it...
First we will enter the basic product information. The page looks like the following screenshot:
- Make sure that the Published checkbox is checked or the product won't appear.
- Enter the EAN barcode or SKU, if you use them, in the Product SKU field. Now enter the actual product name that will appear to customers in the Product Name field. Product Alias can be left blank because VirtueMart will sort that out for us and leave the URL field blank too. The page looks like the following screenshot:
- Click on the Manufacturer dropdown, if you have any manufacturers, and choose one from the list.
- Click on the Product Categories dropdown and choose all the categories you want this to appear in. We have an E-commerce movies category and a CMS Movies category. As this product is VirtueMart the Movie, the appropriate category is chosen. That's it for this box, for now. As we are configuring a simple product, we don't need to concern ourselves with the details here. The page will look like the following screenshot:
- Simply enter the all inclusive price in your main currency into the Final price field. Now check the Calculate Cost Price checkbox. We are almost done.
- Scroll down until you see the Internal note form field, as shown in the following screenshot, and enter any information that might help you remember pertinent facts about this product.
- Click on Save.
How it works...
We have entered the bare minimum required to have a live product in VirtueMart. The next recipes will build on that to have a much fuller offering.
