Internal-oriented values

Some of the methodologies under Agile have explicitly specified the values that enhance agility. Scrum has specified the following values, along with their meanings: focus, courage, openness, commitment, and respect [xii]. Extreme Programming (XP) has specified the following values, along with their meanings: simplicity, communication, feedback, respect, and courage. [xiii]

There is also a view that the Agile Manifesto reflects four key values of agility. Some other values that are aligned with agility are: cooperation, craftsmanship, creativity, enthusiasm, excellence, flexibility, initiative, integrity, reliability, self-discipline, transparency, and trust.

Many enterprises encourage teams to pick and decide upon five to six values for the team from a set of values. Amazon has spelled out its values in the form of leadership principles [xiv], while Netflix has gone to great lengths to describe its culture [xv], and has expressed as here what makes Netflix different from other companies:

  • Encourage independent decision-making by employees
  • Share information openly, broadly, and deliberately
  • Be extraordinarily candid with each other
  • Keep only our highly-effective people
  • Avoid rules
