5.3 Coupling Guard

5.3.1 General

5.3.1.1 Guards for special purpose couplings(in accordance with ISO 10441)shall be of the fully enclosed cylindrical type.Guards for general purpose couplings(in accordance with ISO 14691)shall be base mounted, that is free standing and independently supported from the baseplate.

5.3.1.2 Coupling guard shall prevent any personnel from accessing the moving parts to avoid danger, unless otherwise specified, coupling guard shall be made from the following spark-resisting materials:

—Aluminum or aluminum alloys(with a maximum content of 2% magnesium or 0.2% copper)

—Copper or copper-based alloys(e.g.brass,bronze)

5.3.2 Cylindrical fully enclosed guards

5.3.2.1 Unless otherwise specified, fully enclosed cylindrical guards shall be oil-tight and provided with a flanged drain connection DN25 or larger,a flanged vent connection shall also be provided which shall be fitted with a filter.

5.3.2.2 Cylindrical guards shall be connected to the driving and driven machines through oil-tight joints. The design of these connections shall accommodate relative thermal movement in operation and permit the machines to be moved for alignment purposes.

5.3.2.3 Cylindrical guards shall be sufficiently rigid to withstand a static point load of 900N with a deflection of no more than 0.0005 times the unsupported length of the guard.

5.3.2.4 Unless otherwise specified, cylindrical guards shall be axially split.

5.3.2.5 When necessary, suitable baffles may be incorporated into the guard to minimize windage effects.

5.3.2.6 When instrumentation, such as torque measurement,is incorporated into the coupling guard,it shall be ensured that the temperature generated in the guard does not exceed the maximum allowable temperature of the instrumentation.

5.3.3 Base mounted guards

5.3.3.1 Base mounted guards with supports shall be constructed with sufficient rigidity to withstand a 900N static point load in any direction to ensure the guard not contacting any moving part.

5.3.3.2 Unless otherwise specified, base mounted guards shall be fabricated from metallic materials.
