20.Cardiac Murmurs

Nurse: Hello,Mr. Li,you seem a little bit concerned about this test. Can you tell me what you are worried about?
Patient: Yes. I was told that I had cardiac murmurs during the pre-employment physical examination. How could I have heart disease? If it is true, the hiring company will defnitely turn me down and I would be fnished.
Nurse: Oh,I see. I understand your feeling completely. The test today has a lot to do with your heath and your job search, right?
Patient: Yes. I feel as if I am waiting for a trial verdict.(Rubbing his hands while talking to the nurse.)
Nurse: Don’t worry too much. Cardiac murmurs do not necessarily mean that you have a heart disease. It might be just a temporary physiological condition. Did you have a physical examination before entering college? What were the results then?
Patient: Oh,yes, the doctor told me then that I had a cardiac murmur. But he believed it was a physiological condition. This time I am afraid I will not be so lucky. Otherwise, why was I asked to take the Doppler echocardiograph?
Nurse: The purpose of having you take the Doppler echocardiograph is to obtain a more accurate diagnosis. There are two possible results from the test:either to confrm or to rule out heart disease. Therefore,it is possible for either one of the results.
Patient: Oh,I see. They asked me to take a test does not mean that I have a disease. It can help to rule out some possible problems. For me,there is a 50% chance. It does not mean everything is over. I feel much better now. Thank you so much.
Nurse: You are welcome.
