鞘翅目昆虫是地球上生物多样性最为丰富的类群，目前已知约40万种，约占整个地球已记录生物种类的40%。生态环境的稳定和发展需要生物多样性的支撑，同时生物多样性又是人类社会赖以生存和发展最为重要的物质基础。而人类对生物多样性的认识始于物种。因此，对物种多样性的研究、编目是生物多样性的重要基础性工作；同时，也是维持生态环境安全、农林生产安全、人类健康和生存安全所必需的工作。
本志经野外标本采集，鉴定鞘翅目昆虫类群共计36科451属895种，其中第六卷包含豉甲科3属5种，步甲科42属78种，龙虱科4属7种，牙甲科3属4种，阎甲科1属1种，觅葬甲科1属1种，葬甲科4属7种，隐翅虫科25属91种，粪金龟科2属3种，皮金龟科1属1种，锹甲科14属37种，金龟科38属74种，花甲科1属2种，吉丁科6属19种，叩甲科22属33种，红萤科3属4种，花萤科2属7种，郭公虫科8属11种，大蕈甲科2属3种，露尾甲科2属3种，伪瓢虫科6属8种，瓢虫科8属23种；第七卷包含花蚤科3属3种，拟步甲科19属40种，芫菁科5属10种，瘦天牛科1属1种，天牛97属153种，距甲科2属5种，叶甲科77属176种，铁甲科16属45种，梨象科2属2种，卷象科2属2种，齿颚象科1属1种，隐颏象科4属4种，短角象科1属1种，象虫科23属30种。同时，作者对实际研究过的种类作了比较详细的形态描述，每个种均列有特征、分布、生物学或有关文献等方面的信息，并编有分属、分种检索表。
