Abstract

Architectural regionality and architectural ethnicity are two important characteristics of ethnic minority settlements and architectures. This book is an association study of architectural regionality and architectural ethnicity in ethnic minority settlements of Northwest Yunnan. Villages, dwellings, and religious architectures, are foundations of the research. The study worked from two main relationships. The regionality between people and nature, composed like climate, environment, resources, etc.. While the ethnicity between people and society, includs of ethnic, religion, traditions, etc.. The study worked from two parallel clues, the one settlement with different kinds of ethnic minorities live in, and the one kind of ethnic minority living in diverse settlements. In the end, the research summarized the relevance between architectural regionality and architectural ethnicity.

The book is divided into three parts.

The first part (Introduction, Chapter 1 to 2) is the background and theory basic, including the regional architecture and ethnic minority architecture's research history, the present situation. Then the book introduced the importance of ethnic minority settlments and architectures research. The two different ways of ethnic live in all over the world are the key clues in this book. One is the same ethnicity, while the other one is the same region.

The second part (Chapter 3 to 6) includes of field investigation and architectural cases collection, is the core of the book. Northwest Yunnan is the typical ethnic minority settlements in China; with many ethnic minorities live in there, like Tibetan, Naxi, Bai, Lisu, and others. Nu and Dulong are the small populations among them.

The book has selected dozens of villages as research bases at several regions. In Nujiang Region it includes of Bingzhongluo Gongshan, and in Shangri-La Diqing Region include of Dukezong ancient town, Nixi, Geza, Dongwang, Xiaozhongdian, while Benzilan, Yunling, Yanmen at Deqin. Then the research team has finished the investigations and architectural drawings.

The research lasted about 5 years, finished 4 field researches, and completed nearly 60 architectural drawings in 30 selected villages. The building type include of dwelling, Tibetan temple, Catholic Church and Tusi mansion, meanwhile, involved family surveys.

The Third part (Chapter 7) is the summary of this book.

The settlements, dwellings, and religious architectures were brought into a settlement-architecure system, to discuss the relevance of architectural regionality and architectural ethnicity. In further, the book analyzed the architectural regionality, which is related to people between nature, and the architectural ethnicity, which is related to people between societies.

In the end, the book concluded the important summaries and rules.
