12.【答案】B

13.【答案】D
【解析】“in itself”为固定短语,意为“以其本身而言,本质上”;at,as,on这三个介词均不与itself搭配。
主句,主语+would(should,could,might)+have+过去完成式动词+……
15.【答案】A

【解析】cry out for“迫切需要”。

Part Four Reading Comprehension
根据第一段第五句“The ancient Egyptians knew about many tumors that had a bad outcome, and the Greeks made a distinction between benign tumors (oncos) and malignant ones (carcinos).”
根据最后一段第二句“In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, some physicians attributed cancer—notably of the breast and the ovaries—to psychological and behavioral causes.”
根据文章第二段最后两句“The agonizing manner of cancer death was dreaded, but that fear was not centrally situated in the public mind-as it now is. This is one reason that the medical historian Roy Porter wrote that cancer is“the modern disease par excellence,”and that Mukherjee calls it“the quintessential product of modernity.”
根据第五段内容可知,现代经济的惊人发明会使一小部分企业家变得非常富有,所以A项错误;根据最后一段的“And this, in turn, has led to wider-and not unreasonable-fears that we are living in not merely a plutonomy, but a plutocracy, in which the rich display outsize political influence, narrowly self-interested motives, and a casual indifference to anyone outside their own rarefied economic bubble.”
根据第五段第二句“The wondrous inventions of the modern economy—Google, Amazon, the iPhone broadly improved the lives of middle-class consumers, even as they made a tiny subset of entrepreneurs hugely wealthy.”
根据最后一段的“But the financial crisis and its long, dismal aftermath have changed all that… but a plutocracy, in which the rich display outsize political influence”可知,经济危机和难以消除的余波改变了这一切。
50.【答案】A
根据文章第一段最后一句“It was understanding the idea's significance and selling it to the public that made Darwin great, according to the Arnold Arboretum's new director.”
52.【答案】A
根据第二段最后一句“Friedman said the“historical sketch”that Darwin attached to later printings of his masterpiece was intended to mollify those who demanded credit for their own earlier ideas.”
53.【答案】A
根据文中第五段中的“Though others had clearly pondered evolution before Darwin, he wasn't without originality. Friedman said that Darwin's thinking on natural selection as the mechanism of evolution was shared by few.”
54.【答案】A
根据文章第五段最后两句“Although the book runs more than 400 pages, Friedman said it was never the book on evolution and natural selection that Darwin intended. In 1856, three years before the book was published, he began work on a detailed tome on natural selection that wouldn't see publication until 1975.”
根据文章倒数第二段“Though others thought about evolution before Darwin, scientific discovery requires more than just an idea. In addition to the concept, discovery requires the understanding of the significance of the idea…Lastly, scientific discovery demands the ability to convince others of the correctness of an idea.”
根据文章第一段第三句“Research shows that adults need an average of seven to nine hours of sleep a night for optimal functionality.”和第三段第二句“Prolonged sleep deprivation has long been associated with diminished immune functions, but researchers have also found a direct correlation between“modest”sleep deprivation—less than six hours—and reduced immune response.”
根据第三段最后一句“You'll be glad you got that extra hour of sleep the next time that bug comes around and leaves everyone else bedridden with a fever for three days.”
根据第四段第三句“Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain is aroused from its REM cycle, but the body remains in its immobilizing state.”
根据文章最后一段的“without it, our ability to consolidate memories…is impaired by a large degree.” 再根据最后一句话“Research has revealed that REM sleep, or dream-sleep, helps solidify the“fragile”memories the brain creates throughout the day to that they can be easily organized and stored in the mind's long-term cache.”
根据第二段最后一句“sleep deprivation could permanently hinder the brain's ability to regulate these hormones, leading to elevated blood pressure.”;第三段第三句“Prolonged sleep deprivation has long been associated with diminished immune functions, but researchers have also found a direct correlation between“modest”sleep deprivation—less than six hours—and reduced immune response.”;第四段前两句“During deep REM sleep, your muscles (except those in the eyes) are essentially immobilized in order to keep you from acting out on your dreams. Unfortunately, this effort your body makes to keep you safe while dreaming can sometimes backfire, resulting in sleep paralysis.”;最后一段前两句“For a second, imagine all of your memories are erased;every birthday, summer vacation, even what you did yesterday afternoon is completely lost, because you have no recollection of them. It's a chilling thought, but that is what a life without sleep would be like.”

【解析】“Not only…but also”连接两个句子时,Not only部分倒装,but also部分不倒装。
71.【答案】did后加not

73.【答案】after改为before
This is a convenient play为主系表结构,句子完整,后面跟现在分词,之间缺少衔接词,所以trying前加and。
Part Six Writing
Minimum wage in China
As domestic inflation is rising, the minimum wage becomes higher in many places. However, different opinions exist about the benefits and drawbacks of a higher minimum wage.
Supporters of raising the minimum wage think that it increases the standard of living for the poorest and most vulnerable class in society and raises the average income, motivates and encourages employees to work harder, and stimulates consumption. Opponents consider that it is less effective and more damaging to businesses than other methods of reducing poverty.
As far as I am concerned, it is obvious that the minimum wage legislation brings more harm than good. Firstly, raising minimum wages may harm some businesses where the labor cost affects the profit a lot. Secondly, it may reduce the demand for workers, so more and more laborers will not find jobs. And the rate of unemployment will increase. Thirdly, it forbids employers to pay less than a legal minimum, which is equivalent to forbidding workers to sell their labor for less than the minimum wage. The legal restriction that employers cannot pay less than a legislated wage is equivalent to the legal restriction that workers cannot work at all in the protected sector unless they can find employers willing to hire them at that wage. Last but not least, it will widen the gap between the rich and the poor, because the rise of the minimum wage will only make the rich richer and the poor poorer. Next, the wider gap will appear.
In a nutshell, we can draw a conclusion that the disadvantages of raising the minimum wage outweigh the advantages of that. Consequently, before raising the minimum wage, more aspects should be taken into account.
