Forget the Chicago classics of deep-dish pizza and hefty steaks washed down with Miller Lite. Farmhouse is all about the capital of the Midwest's more recent obsession: farm-to-fork fare and local craft brews. After all, Chicago's wealth of warehouses has helped it become America's craft beer capital, with about 1.6m sq ft of craft brewery space.
Located a few blocks from the tech hubs Merchandise Mart and 600 West Chicago, and steps from two train lines running to some of the city's trendier neighbourhoods, Farmhouse attracts a techie crowd and young professionals, creating a lively but not loud atmosphere.
The menu, which is home cooking made fancy, is all sourced from Midwest farms in nearby states like Wisconsin (the cheese curd sticks are a favourite), and Farmhouse even offers wine from Michigan. Chicago's long winters (think snow in April and chilly in May) leave little space for glamour. It makes warm, dark taverns where you can rock up in your (clean) welly boots and woolly jumpers enticing.
Farmhouse's low-lit hipster take on cosy is also about local sourcing too. It says 85 per cent of its decor is produced from locally salvaged materials and furniture, including the bevador — a vintage refrigerator. With even the condiments made in-house, you will not find a Heinz ketchup bottle lurking on your table.
