This excerpt is taken from the 350th page of History of Zhejiang Songs and Ballads (《浙江歌谣源流史》) by Zhu Qiufeng (朱秋枫). Hymn to Emperor Gaoxin (高辛氏,即帝喾) is a song of the She Nationality (畲族) , which narrates how Pangu creates the world and how the She Nationality is sprung from Emperor Gaoxin. The legend goes that, as the prince Longqi, the earliest ancestor of the She Nationality, was unwilling to hold any official position, Emperor Gaoxin allowed him to live around the Fenghuang Mountains of the present Chaozhou (潮州凤凰山一带).

Historical records and documents show that people of the She Nationality had suffered a great deal from the oppression and exploitation of the ruling classes in the feudal society. Early in the Tang Dynasty, they had risen in resistance. (Zhu Qiufeng, 2004: 351)

During the Ming Dynasty, some branches of the nationality moved from Fujian to Southern Zhejiang.
