Long-Haired Girl

At the foot of a steep hill, there was a tribaltribal adj.部落的 village. The villagers led a very hard life because they did not have enough water. In this village, lived a beautiful little girl. Everyone calledcall v.称呼 her the “Long-Haired Girl” because she had long, black hair.

One day, the Long-Haired Girl's mother fell ill. The Long-Haired Girl went to the steep hill to gather some herbsherb n.药草;香草 for her mother. At the top of the hill, she discovered a huge radishradish n.萝卜 on the cliff. She thought to herself:“How great it will be if I can bring this huge radish back to my mother! ”

The Long-Haired Girl used all her strength to pull the huge radish out of the ground. Suddenly, a stream of spring waterspring water泉水 rushed out. The Long-Haired Girl got excited. She put the hugehuge adj.巨大的;庞大的 radish on the floor and drank the spring water. Suddenly, the radish flew up and stopped up the mouth of the spring.

The Long-Haired Girl was blown into a mountain cavecave n.洞穴;窑洞 by a stream of strange wind. A fiercefierce adj.凶猛的 looking Mountain Monster was standing right in front ofin front of在……前面 her. He raised his voice at the Long-Haired Girl:“I have stopped up the mouth of the spring. Do not tell anyone about this secret, or I will kill you! ”

The Long-Haired Girl returned home. She did not daredare v.敢;敢于 tell her mother what had happened.

She felt terrible about hiding the secretsecret n.秘密 and her long black hair became silverysilvery adj.银色的 white overnight.

When the Long-Haired Girl saw that her fellow villagers were dying of thirst, she could not keep the secret anymore.

She told them the secret of the spring water and led everyone to the steep hill where the spring was.

Everyone was happy. When the huge radish flew up to sealseal v.封上;密封 the spring mouth, the Long-Haired Girl took out a knife and cut the radish in half. All of a sudden, a strange blast of wind blew across and the Long-Haired Girl disappearedisappear v.消失;失踪.

The furious Mountain Monster took the Long-Haired Girl away. He punishedpunish v.罚;惩罚 her by putting her at the mouth of the spring to make her suffer the pain of being hit by the falling water. The Long-Haired Girl was ready to sacrificesacrifice v.牺牲 herself and to do whatever the Mountain Monster asked her to do but under one conditioncondition n.条件. She wanted to see her mother one last time.

The Long-Haired Girl was releasedrelease v.释放;解放. But whenever she thought about leaving her mother, she became miserable and cried uncontrollablyuncontrollably adv.控制不住地 under the big Banyan Tree. The kind-hearted Banyan Tree God appeared before the Long-Haired Girl. He appreciatedappreciate v.欣赏 her bravery and wanted to help her.

The Banyan Tree God used his magicalmagical adj.有魔力的 power to turn a stone into a statuestatue n.雕像 that looked like the Long-Haired Girl.

In order for the statue to look exactly like the Long-Haired Girl, he transferredtransfer v.转移;转变 her long hair to the stone statue.

The Banyan Tree God blew gentlygently adv.轻轻地 at a leafleaf n.叶子 and the leaf became as huge as a ship.

The large leaf carried the stone statue to the steep hill and left the statue standing at the mouth of the spring.

Soon, the Mountain Monster realized that he had been cheatedcheat v.欺骗. He used his magical power to seek revenge. The sky turned dark all of a sudden and the Mountain Monster appeared among the dark cloud and roaredroar v.咆哮 loudly: “How dare you all fool me! I am going to kill everyone in the village! ”

The Long-Haired Girl was reallyreally adv.实际上 scared. Everyone in the village was in great danger this time. The Banyan Tree God said: “Do not be afraid, I think he is seeking his own death. Come on, take this bowbow n.弓 to shoot him! ” The Banyan Tree God turned a branchbranch n.树枝 into a bow and passed it to the Long-Haired Girl.
