Development of Taoism Personality Item Version Scale and its Rethought

Tu Yangjun, Guo Yongyu

Abstract: In view of the perspective of human nature - psychology -behavior influenced by Taoism ideology and culture, and each personality theory inherently includes some kind of thoughts about human nature, the authors discussed the operational definition about what is Taoism Personality: influenced by traditional Taoism ideology and culture, the Taoism Personality includes many traits reflecting on the cognitive, emotion/feeling, willness and behavior which are congruent with the nature of Taoism. Based on the theory analysis, the authors picked 486 words describing people's personality from the classical Taoism books, finally remain 37 words by meaning analysis and pretest with several times, and also develop the original version of Taoism Personality Item Scale with a six dimensions' structure(including ZiRan, BenZhen, RouRen, QianTui, ChaoTuo and GuaYu)which is supported by the following the Confirmatory Factor Analysis(CFA). The reliability coefficient(α)and test-retest reliability of the all Taoism Personality Item Version dimensions respectively distribute from 0.430 to 0.704 and from 0.528 to 0.721. The correlations of items-dimensions and dimensions -dimensions respectively(absolute value)distribute from 0.389 to 0.795 and from 0.157 to 0.444. The authors rethought the results and point out:(1)there is a conflict to a certain degree between trait theory with factor analysis method and Taoism integrating human nature, which may be detrimental to the validity of the Item Version Scale.(2)in order to understand the Taoism Personality, it is necessary to apply the integration unit(not the dimension unit)with the level feature of the cognitive emotion willness behavior.(3)while Situational Judgment Test may be appropriate to as a tool to measure the Tradition Chinese culture features, its validity still remains open. The future research including: exploring the richer meaning of the dimensions of the Taoism Personality Scale by collecting richer qualitative data; development of the Taoism Scale of Way of Thought.
