Acknowledgements

In completing this book,I am indebted to the doctoral faculty and my fellow colleagues at Shanghai International Studies University for their thoughtful guidance and generous support.

My gratitude to Professor Steve Kulich,my mentor, has accumulated over the years and could not be fully expressed here.He taught me the state of the art of intercultural communication research and always challenged me to think beyond“disciplinary limits”.My interest in the dynamic view of culture stemmed from his inspiring seminar on interdisciplinary intercultural research. His thoughtful guidance, timely encouragement and generous assistance were essential to the completion of my book.More importantly,Professor Kulich’s broad heart and rigorous attitude toward academic excellence have modeled the motto of our Intercultural Institute:“Developing a discipline to develop people.”I have benefited tremendously from working with him over the years, and as a result,I have gradually grown to be a more mature researcher.

I thank Professor Wang Enming for his enlightening lectures on American Studies that broadened my academic horizons and for his encouragement.I feel grateful to Professor Zhang Hongling for her useful critique of my book proposal,to Professor Kenneth Cushner for his informative talks on research methodology, and to Professor Zhang Jian for his inspiring lectures on translation.

I thank Zhang Rui for his constructive suggestions on my book ideas and his assistance in the statistical analysis of the data.I thank Cooper Wakefield,my former teacher and long-time friend, for his help in developing the case and for his thoughts and encouragement throughout the project.I am also grateful to Professor Michael Prosser for his revision of the draft of this book and to Professor David Henry for sharing his intercultural story with me.

I feel fortunate to be blessed with a very special intercultural research team of SISU Intercultural Institute who are most friendly, supportive and helpful. They are the late Professor Wu Baixing,Chi Ruobing,Zhang Xiaojia,Wang Yi’an,Liang Wenbo,Ma Sang,Fu Xiaoqiu,Wang Xiaoling, and Li Jiajun.I would like to thank them for their insightful comments on my book idea, valuable suggestions for the draft development, and concrete help in locating sources.Su Lingtong,Wang Yi’an,and Liang Wenbo have my special appreciation for their help in data collection.

My thanks are also due to the School of Vocational Education,Shanghai International Studies University for their support throughout the project.

Finally,I must record my heartfelt gratitude for my wife Jane,my son Jimmy, and my daughter Amy.Without their love, care, and support, this book would have never been completed. To my dear family I dedicate this book.
