Stanford University: The wind of freedom blows
Back to its origin
Leland Stanford, Governor of California, later a U.S. senator and leading railroad magnate, and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, established the university in 1891 in memory of their son, Leland Stanford, Jr., who died of typhoid two months before his 16th birthday in 1885 when his family was traveling in Italy. After his death, the Stanfords decided that, because they no longer could do anything for their own child, "the children of California shall be our children." They quickly set about to find a lasting way to memorialize their beloved son. The university has a history of boldness from the outset, as it was created as a coeducational and nondenominational university at a time when most were male-only and associated with a religion. Tuition was free until the 1930s. Today, Stanford is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in the United States and the world. Stanford"s School of Medicine alone has three Nobel Laureates and the physics department has many more, and there are over 50 Nobel Laureates in the Stanford alumni realm.
